Who will win League 2?

Farewell To Danny Coyne Or Just Rumour?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 31/05/2003

THE Grimsby Telegraph reports today that Danny Coyne has dropped his strongest hint yet that he could quit Blundell Park. It is understood that he is wanted by first division sides, Burnley and Coventry, as well as another big Midlands club.

His future is again in doubt and the board would love to cut his wages off the weekly bill. But for Coyne, the biggest factor remains his hopes of making the breakthrough with Mark Hughes' Wales side as he eyes a possible trip to Euro 2004 in Portugal in a year's time.

"It's always nice and flattering to be linked with a big club but nothing has come of it yet," said Coyne. I take all the speculation with a big pinch of salt. But you have to look at your career at the end of the day and I want to play at the highest level possible.

"Playing for Wales is another ambition I'm trying to fulfil on a regular basis and I've got to be playing as high as I can to achieve that. I'm still under contract at Grimsby, and I don't want to be disrespectful to them. I've got into the Wales squad playing for Grimsby and I've had the best football of my career here."

"But I want to play as high as I possibly can, and Burnley are a massive club. I know quite a few of the lads there. The speculation has been well publicised, but we will have to wait and see what happens."

"Obviously Burnley are a big club and the ambition is there. And from what I hear about the manager, and what I've seen, he has a great reputation, and is ambitious himself, which would match my ambition."
