Macca Two Year Deal - Signs Today

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 16/06/2003

According to BBC Radio Humberside, Town legend John McDermott will pen a new two year contract later today. Macca, who has been with the club since 1986, and now out of contract with the Mariners, was believed to have been attracting interest from several 1st and 2nd division sides.

"Macca" was also very close to signing a deal with the Mariners arch-rivals, Hull City, until a deal fell through and the Tigers opted to sign Tottenham full back Alton Thelwell. Sheffield Wednesday and a few first division clubs were also expressing an interest in Town's record appearance holder, but it seems that after a holiday abroad, McDermott has decided to prolong his 17 year stay with Town, committing himself at the club until 2005 when he will be 36.

This news, if correct, will delight Mariners fans and will come as a massive boost to Town player manager Paul Groves, who like many Town fans, was at one point, resigned to McDermott's loss. Similar to many other players at Town, McDermott will be on much reduced terms - but the fact that he has now signed on these terms with Town, rejecting other, probably higher offers, underlines Macca's committment and loyalty to his club. McDermott's committment to Town will raise the hopes of Grimsby fans who are sceptical to whether Town can mount a serious promotion challenge next season, while his decision to stay could also help persuade the likes of George Santos that next season, Blundell Park is the place to be.

This "signing" now brings The Mariners signing quota of ten, up to two, along with Tony Crane, with a mystery foreigner expected to sign tomorrow.
