The Missing Ingredient

A man walks into a chip shop and requests "fish 'n' chips twice". The bloke behind the counter says "it's alright mate I heard you the first time!"

A joke this may be, but twice is the amount of times I've had any decent fish 'n' chips in the last 4 years.

I am a Grimsby Exile. I moved to London in 2000 in search of fame and fortune - well just somewhere I can go out have a good time without getting into a fight with some Burberry clad Rockport wearing thugs really.

I have to say I don't regret it for a minute, the thrill of supporting your home town from afar is a special one. Sure you take the hits harder, when Grimsby lose then everyone in the office automatically descends on me, but fortunately the same is true when we win.

The joy of seeing a Grimsby three points come rolling in on a pub TV screen down here gives an extra special flutter of the heart.

However one thing that can never be replaced is the Fish and Chips. A small thing you might think, something that those of you still living in Grimsby wouldn't give a second thought to but oh, the joy of that thick white fleshy delicacy is sorely missed.

Down south the fish is flakey, it's dry, it's full of bones and it constantly disappoints. Oh how I remember Marklews, Seaways, Leon's fish restaurant, Steel's and of course fish 'n' chick. There is nothing quite like stumbling home on a belly full of ale through Bargate and stopping off for a tray of steaming hot vinegar infused fish 'n' chips.

So to all of you Grimbarians planning your weekend, please I ask of you try and include the chippy in your plans and think of us exiles as you do.
