Rushden 1 Town 0

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/08/2004

TOWN were left cursing their luck this afternoon, after dominating the vast majority of the game against Rushden and Diamonds, only to concede a goal against the run of play, and end up losing 1-0.

Russell Slade promoted star striker Michael Reddy from the bench to the Starting XI (at the expense of Darren Mansaram), and the optimism at the away end was cleared shared in the visiting dressing room as Grimsby spent the early period of the game virtually camped in Rushden's half.

Grimsby's domination, however, did not generally lead to gilt-edged chances, with moves either breaking down with the final pass going astray or somebody choosing to shoot from distance. The best chances of the opening period fell to Jason Crowe.

Towards half time Rushden did come into the game a little more, but a Grimsby win looked the only result.

Any seasoned Town watcher knows the rest of the story. Rushden scored against the run of play through a Kevin Braniff tap-in, spent the rest of the game wasting even more time than they had been when the score was 0-0, and could have gone on to score a couple more but for good saves by Town 'keeper Anthony Williams.

Mansaram came on for Sestanovich, and a few late chances fell Grimsby's way, but in the end they just could not score.

The system Town play with just three at the back means they are likely to concede goals (as they have done in every game). Grimsby have gone 1-0 down now in all 4 games this season. On one occasion they have come back on win; on another they have drawn 1-1; in the remaining two games they have been unlucky to lose 1-0.
