Fenty On New Stadium And The Tax Bill

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 05/01/2005

RADIO Humberside report today on the interview with John Fenty regarding the new stadium, the outstanding tax bill and that they are hoping to forge an alliance with the local council to try and get their move to a new ground back on track.

Radio Humberside reported; The Mariners are looking to vacate Blundell Park and are hoping North East Lincolnshire Council's politicians and new chief executive will throw their weight behind the project.

Town chairman John Fenty is happy with the new appointment:

"We're really pleased to see the arrival of the new chief executive in the council. He's just got his feet under the table and we've got tabled a meeting with him in the new year. We do have ideas and ways forward."

"The biggest thing we need at the moment is an anchor tenant - clearly everybody knows that needs to be a retailer within the current planning permission, and unless we can find a good quality anchor tenant, then you don't attract the other tenants. If that can't be the case, then we have to have a rethink, and we've got ideas and ways forward but again we'll need political support to carry those."

But before that, there's a more pressing problem according to Fenty. That is an unpaid tax bill, and the club may have to solicit support from the community to overcome that difficulty:

"We've got a tax debt and we're looking to solve that as we speak. We have had a response, we're still fairly optimistic that we can get a settlement with them, although at the moment they're not talking the same languages as ourselves.

It might be necessary at some stage to talk to the community and really express the nature of the problem and we might be looking for support in the community. That's a matter of time before we can determine that."
