Macca Signs Again!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/06/2006

VETERAN defender John McDermott has signed a new one year contract to remain at Blundell Park for a further year - his 21st at the club. The 37-year-old had hoped to have been involved on the coaching side, but has just been offered a playing contract.

Town's record appearance holder, who has been the regular right back at Blundell Park for almost two decades, told the Grimsby Telegraph: "I am looking forward to it. I would have liked to do some coaching but the deal on offer was just a playing one and I totally understand that.

"It's unfortunate it couldn't have been sorted out sooner. I have spent most of the summer wondering what is going to happen and waiting for people to get back off holiday.

"I had some interest from elsewhere and, to be honest, I was starting to feel my time had come to leave. But it's better the devil you know and I'm happy to still be here.

Macca characteristically would not commit himself to this being his last season. Having made 37 appearances last season Town's No. 2 would only say: "Never say never. But it most likely will be the last one."

  • Town are hoping to reveal the identity of their new Premiership goalkeeper shortly, with a signing possibly expected in the next few hours.
