Austin Mitchell Responds to The Call For Support

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 15/01/2007

TOWN supporter, Les Bell, was one of the many fans who sent messages to Austin Mitchell calling for his support of the club in their quest to get planning permission for the new stadium.

Austin Mitchell has now replied to him which answers the question of whether he supports the move or not.

Dear Les,

Thank you for writing about Grimsby Town's proposals for a new ground, a move to Great Coates and a new development there.

I haven't replied before because I've been awaiting a meeting with John Fenty the Chairman. I wasn't able to meet him on the proposed New Year date. The meeting will now take place on Friday 12 January, before Town s Planning Application is formally considered.

As MP you'll understand that I don't have any standing in planning matters which are a council responsibility. However, as a supporter of Grimsby Town I think you can take it that I will be joining with other local MPs to express our collective support for John Fenty's proposals.

My own support is, of course, subject to measures to alleviate the fears and concerns of the residents of Great Coates who I also represent and who were so anxious last time. Their interests need to be protected but I'm sure that can be done, and it is more than time that this issue is resolved. Then Town can begin to benefit, and be boasted by the fine new ground we've been working for, for so long.

Grimsby needs a team and a ground we can be proud of.

Thanks for your support.

AUSTIN MITCHELL MP
Great Grimsby
