Doubts were raised by Town fans about centre back Glen Downey's existence after he seemed to appear on the bench for Grimsby around 30 odd times without ever making an appearance.
Downey was signed a few weeks into the 2004/2005 season from Scarborough, after having spells previously with Hartlepool United and Bishop Auckland. Glen was the son of a family friend of Slade's and despite this he made only 3 appearances in two seasons of football at Blundell Park, and getting on the scoresheet once.
Downey was released in May 2006 and joined non league Worksop Town, where he was released a few months later.
