Grimsby 1 Chester 2

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/10/2007

GRIMSBY came back down to earth after two straight wins with a 2-1 defeat at home to Chester City. Chester took the lead through Murphy on 10 minutes when Grimsby failed to play to the whistle when the referee played advantage instead of awarding a free kick for a foul on Ellison.

Town equalised within 15 minutes with a brilliant move down the right hand side involving Mulligan, Till and Clarke. Clarke delivered a perfect cross for Boshell to head home.

Rankin then missed a golden chance to put Town in front but the ball got caught under his feet and ended up being cleared with the keeper untested. A minute later a fine run by Till ended in Rankin missing another good chance.

In the second half Rankin missed another chance almost straight away. Ellison then immediately added a second for Chester when a Simon Yeo shot rebounded off the post.

Town pressed forward and sub Gary Jones hit the post from a corner.

The final score was tough luck on the Mariners who shot will be kicking themselves for conceding such a soft opening goal. Justin Whittle's presence was missed at the back and he's likely to feature again in Saturday's game at Peterborough when Mulligan will no longer be available. Rankin and Taylor both had enough opportunities to draw if not win the game, and Jones was unlucky to hit the woodwork towards the end.
