Grimsby 1 Morecambe 2

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 18/11/2007

GRIMSBY slumped to another defeat in the league and now look in serious relegation trouble following the 2-1 loss to Morecambe at Blundell Park. Town have now gone eight League games with just a single point to show for it.

Before Saturday's game Morecambe had themselves gone seven league games without a win, which meant the game was as near a relegation six pointer as is possible in November. With two good results in the cup against opposition from higher leagues and no longer having the excuse of playing the more successful League Two clubs, Grimsby were expected to get three points against the Shrimpers and ease the pressure on Grimsby manager Alan Buckley.

Town though started badly and were lucky to only be one goal down at the break. Newby gave the Football League newcomers the lead when raced onto a ball down the right from Adam Yates and delicately lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Phil Barnes.

But Town bounced straight back when substitute Andy Taylor latched on to a poor back pass and finished well to give the Mariners a lifeline.

Danny Boshell was then shown a straight red card for what was judged to be a dangerous tackle on Yates, effectively ending Town's challenge.

After Tuesday's cup replay, in the League Grimsby next have a difficult trip to Barnet (who have never scored or even got a point against Town!), before another bogey side Darlington visit Blundell Park. If Town lose both these games they are virtually certain to be bottom of the entire Football League and staring Conference football in the face.

A full match report will appear later.
