Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Ref: Final Should be Replayed

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/04/2008

THE referee in the Johnstone Paint Final against MK Dons on Sunday has admitted he got the second half penalty decision wrong. Nottingham-based referee Phil Joslin in a radio interview said "I got it wrong" and has suggested that the match should be replayed.

"I feel terrible about it", Joslin told Radio Lapir. "Watching the television replays after the game I could see that there was minimal contact with the lad, and it should never have been a penalty".

Joslin awarded a 74th minute penalty to MK Dons when Nick Hegarty pushed an MK Dons player in the box during a goal mouth scramble. Dons' skipper Keith Andrews scored from the resulting spot kick to make the scoreline 1-0 and gave Town a mountain to climb to get back into the game, which they eventually lost 2-0.

"I would like to see the game replayed", added Joslin. "I've done Grimsby a terrible injustice and the only way to sort it out it to get everyone back and start again".

In 1999 the Bulgarian Cup Final between FC Kjoer and Vener Paphen was replayed after the referee admitted that he should never have sent off two Kjoer players. The original match saw Paphen win 1-4, but the replay saw the reverse scoreline with Kjoer lifting the trophy after winning by a 4-1 margin.

A spokesman for Wembley stadium has told the Fishy that they would be happy to arrange a new Johnstone Paint Final game if asked by the Football League but it would have to wait until late May or early June to fit in with a busy schedule at the national stadium.

When the Fishy contacted the competition's sponsors Johnstone Paint a press spokesman said they too would be happy for the game to be replayed.

"It actually would be quite apt", said the spokesman Watar Yewon. "Sometimes in our business one coat is not enough and you need a second covering to get a satisfactory result."
