Bike to the Bank

By: Matty Newton
Date: 26/07/2008

AS many of you are aware on the 30th of August, Lincoln are at home to the Mighty Mariners. Around 30 fans from Grimsby will be cycling the 40 miles from Blundell Park in Cleethorpes to Sincil Bank in Lincoln.

Lincoln fans will be joining us half way along the route as we try to raise as much money as possible for our three chosen charities: Cancer Research UK, St Andrews Hospice in Grimsby, and St Barnabas Hospice in Lincoln.

Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph, Jonathan Spurr (lincolnsmariner), co-organiser said:

"It is an element of fun, for good causes, and we are saying we don't need the violence.

"The hooligans are giving the clubs a bad name, and you don't need violence in football. We are not expecting any trouble and the police and ambulance are supporting us.

"We are targeting £10,000 for Cancer Research, St Andrew's Hospice in Grimsby and St Barnabas' Hospice in Lincoln.

"So far, there are about 20 confirmed Grimsby fans taking part and the club is fully supportive."

Mr Spurr is one of two organisers, but admits to being a rookie on a bike. He said: "I've been out practising because I don't do it a lot."

Grimsby Town press officer Dale Ladson said: "We are fully supportive of this and we think it is a great idea to get two sets of fans together. And of course, it is for a good cause too."

Visit www.biketothebank.co.uk and show your support either via donation or by leaving us a message. Every little helps and we are thankful for all your support.
