By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/11/2008

THE latest Cod Head of the Week is Pete Turner, who has been supporting the Mariners since 1953..

We regularly need new Cod Heads, so would appreciate contributions from lifelong supporters of the Mariners. This week's Cod Head is Pete Turner.

Pete Turner

Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?

Pete:
My first game was in 1955 when I was 7 I can't remember who we were playing but I do remember Town playing Fulham with JOHNNY HAYNES in their team when I was very young.

Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?

Pete:
So many good players over the years but Ron Rafferty was my idol, even though he did not make it into my best ever player team on the Fishy.

Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?

Pete:
Best ever match must be when we beat Wolves 5-1 and Drinkell could only make the bench with Wilko and Lund up front. Kev came on and scored and it was on the telly.

Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?

Pete:
Favourite away ground must be Anfield: great crowd; least favourite QPR they threw bricks at us.

Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?

Pete:
Best season has to be 1998, our two Wembley wins and the worst was 68-69 season when we had to seek re-election.

Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?

Pete:
Most eventful day was going to see Town at Huddersfield found out it was postponed so went to Sheffield only to find that off, ended up at Rotherham it was full to the brim because Stanley Mathews was playing for Stoke but when the teams came out he was not playing (he was getting on and it was muddy); half the crowd left at HT.

Fishy:
What is the worst game you've ever been to?

Pete:
Worst game was Luton away we lost 6-0 it was pi..ing down all match with no cover, the Luton fans were throwing coins at us and the police were useless.

Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?

Pete:
Greatest ever Town manager was Bill Shankly but if you are looking for who was best for Town it's got to be Alan Buckley

Fishy:
What's the most amusing chant you've heard at a game?

Fishy:
Most amusing chant was about the Yorkshire Ripper. Town fans use to sing it to the Yorkshire teams when they came to Blundell Park.

Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?

Pete:
Only get to a few home games now as I live in Suffolk, but always go to any of Town away games when they are down here. I watch sky sports for updates of games and keep going on to the Fishy when Town are playing.

Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?

Pete:
All star line up for Town I put on the Fishy but the best team that played for Town together must be Batch, Stone, Crombie, Wigginton, K. Moore, Ford, Waters, Speight Cumming, Wilkinson, Drinkell but there are so many others I could pick we have had a lot of very good players over the years and some not so good ones.
