Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Newell Blasts Moaners

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/03/2009

TOWN boss Mike Newell hit out at fans who he felt had already written the Mariners off this season. In his post-match comments Newell said: "There is pessimism around the place. You can hear it from some of the supporters and they have resigned themselves to the fact that you are going into the bottom two and automatically going down."

"I won't have that and certainly won't have it in the dressing room," blasted Newell, who believes Town can still turn it around.

Newell said : "We just have to keep soldiering on and believing in ourselves. There are 12 games to go and we start again with Lincoln on Saturday.

"We are trying to get into their minds that they are good enough and we can get results. We have just lost five games on the bounce having started to get it going in January.

"The results have not gone our way and you find yourself in a difficult position, but this is where you find out about people and you find out about yourself."

Last night saw Grimsby finally enter the bottom two, and lose ground on some of the other teams, with both Bournemouth and Barnet winning.

Grim Rob Says Of course you still have to believe Town can do it, although realistically it looks like Grimsby or Chester who will go down along with Luton. Chester have had just as bad a run as we are on, and their supporters must fear the worst as well as ours. We simply must win the game against them to stand any chance, and pick up a few more points in the remaining games. But plenty of clubs have clawed their way out of far harder positions than we are in now. The league table will look a lot rosier if we get three points on Saturday.
