Crewe Cut Down the Mariners

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/03/2010

GRIMSBY'S mini revival came to a crashing end in a 4-2 reverse at Crewe last night. Only some fine saves by Nick Colgan and two opportunistic first half goals my Town prevented the scoreline from being a more emphatic defeat in a game which the Railwaymen dominated.

Linwood came in for the injured Oliver Lancashire in an enforced change by Neil Woods.

In a bright opening both sides had plenty of possession but Crewe had the first serious chance when Donaldson turned Linwood and found himself in space but Colgan made a good save to deny the Crewe striker.

A few minutes later Colgan made another save to deny Crewe and palmed it round the post for a corner.

On 15 minutes Akpro set up Coulson who tried to lift the ball over the 'keeper, but it was cleared for a corner.

On 19 minutes Colgan made another good low save to deny Miller. In the following ten minutes the Town 'keeper was called upon to make another two further telling saves.

Moore finally broke the deadlock on 30 when Town failed to clear their lines and after a long spell of pressure Moore's shot went in off the post.

Akpro scored an equaliser on 32 totally against the run of play with an individual goal, where he beat two players and slotted the ball past the 'keeper.

Crewe broke into Town's box within a minute and Grant slotted the ball past Colgan into the corner to restore Crewe's lead.

5 minutes before half time Devitt limped off and was replaced by Hegarty.

Sinclair then again pulled Town back into the game a few minutes before half time when Akpro crossed the ball, it fell to Sinclair on the edge of the box, and he cooly finished.

Town finished the stronger of the two sides after all the excitement.

Half Time: Crewe 2 Grimsby 2.

Neil Woods would be delighted to still be in the game after a half in which Crewe dominated and had the bulk of the chance. Colgan's saves had kept Grimsby in the game.

Early in the second half Westwood restored Crewe's lead with a well taken goal.

After a long spell of Crewe domination Town almost scored again when Hegarty crossed and Peacock's shot was saved.

Miller set up Donaldson again with 15 minutes to go but Colgan narrowed the angle and he shot wide.

With 5 minutes to go Martin was shown a straight red card for a foul on Leary.

But the extra man made no difference and Donaldson turned and beat Linwood to add a fourth in injury time.

Town can claim they were in the game until the last minute of injury time and with a extra man for the last ten minutes they could have taken a point. However they did not deserve to get anything from the match, and the Mariners now need to win at Morecambe on Saturday.
