Football Now Certainly Needs a Shake-Up

By: Steve Johnson
Date: 03/07/2010

AS I predicted in my article, Football needs a shake-up. England made a sad and early exit from the World Cup. However I did not expect their performances to be so woeful and lacking in effort. What will we learn from this? I suspect on first evidence very little.

Capello has proven to be a poor choice. His Italian discipline does not work with our pampered and over paid players. To put them in an isolated training camp doing very little was ill conceived and obviously no one in charge had the bottle to try and explain this to him.

His squad and team selection was poor, substitutions and tactics not relevant to the opposition. However as the bulk of those running the F.A. are of limited competence, as shown by the size of Capello's contract, I fully expect him to stay.

Already the papers are full of foreign signings. The percentage of English players in the Premiership is in the 40's whereas the nationals in Spain and Germany are in the 60's. Germany play 20 year olds, we play unfit 30 year olds. Our 20 year olds cannot get regular places in Premiership sides because of all the foreign players.

Let's get an English manager ,get rid of most of the present squad, and that could involve dropping Rooney, pick young players and stick with them

Come to think about it Grimsby could do the same once they get back in the Football League.
