Town Drop More Points

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 16/10/2010 (Last updated: 17/01/2012)

ALAN Connell was once again Town's saviour, rescuing a point for the Mariners at home to lowly Southport on another frustrating afternoon for Grimsby and their fans. After a bright start by Town, who twice hit the woodwork early on, it was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play and who lead at the break.

Rob Eagle (suspended) and Steven Watt (injured) were enforced changes for Town boss Neil Woods, with their replacements being Lee Ridley and Rob Atkinson, the latter making his first start of the season. Woods moved the versatile Bradley Wood to the left side of midfield in place of Eagle, and Ridley started in his usual left back berth.

Town started strongly after the frustration of previous games when they had gone 2-0 down early on. After early chances for Connell and Carlton, Grimsby were desperately unlucky not to go into the lead when they hit the woodwork in quick succession. Bore initially struck the ball against the crossbar, then from the resulting rebound it came off a Southport defender under pressure from Carlton onto the woodwork.

Town went a goal down from a corner midway through the first period. The ball was initially cleared by Town but fell to Blakeman on the edge of the box who riffled it past O'Connell.

Once again the goal knocked the stuffing out of Town and they were unable to create anything of substance in the remainder of the first half.

Town improved after the break and Peacock had a "goal" disallowed for a foul, before Connell brought Town back into the game with a clever lob in front of the Pontoon with 15 minutes left.

Town came close to a winner, with Bore and Peacock having chances but it was not to be.
