A First Win

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/04/2011

GRIMSBY's new managers finally picked up their first win after seven attempts in an end of season game at Mansfield last night. Michael Coulson and debutant Charlie l'Anson scored the goals, with the Mariners also keeping a rare clean sheet.

Scott/Hurst made five changes from Saturday's draw with Bath, with Arthur returning in goal and youth team defender l'Anson making his debut in central defence.

Mansfield started the stronger of the two sides and Arthur did well to parry to deny Briscoe's effort.

Town were mainly restricted to chances on the break and the Mariners could have taken the lead when Connell played Peacock in, but he shot wide.

The Mariners gradually came in to the game and took the lead just before half time. A terrific cross by Thanoj found Coulson at the far post, who headed Town in front.

Arthur had to be alert to deny Mansfield in first half injury time, but Town's 'keeper managed to save Briscoe's effort and pluck the ball from the feet of Connor.

Town were more comfortable during the second half, with neither side looking particularly like scoring.

The Mariners though went further ahead when Connell took a corner and L'anson headed it in for a debut goal.

Almost immediately Connell created some space for himself in the penalty area, turned and struck a shot past the 'keeper, but it rebounded off the post.

The Mariners played the rest of the game out for a fairly comfortable win.
