Who will win League 2?

Lightning Strikes Twice

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 12/10/2011

EVERY twenty years or so Grimsby win 5-2. In their previous home game Town beat Alfreton 5-2 and incredibly on Tuesday night the Mariners recorded an identical scoreline against Barrow. As against Alfreton, Hearn and Elding shared the spoils, but on this occasion Hearn scored three goals.

Town took the lead on five minutes when Hearn was played through by Ridley and slid the ball under the 'keeper, only for striker Paul Smith soon to equalise for the visitors from a set piece.

Both sides had chances to go ahead with Barrow going very close when a Quinn header was powered against the bar from a corner, but just before half time Grimsby were in front once again, with Hearn finding the target after playing a 1-2 with Disley.

However Barrow's Jack Mackreth deservedly levelled the game nine minutes after the restart, finishing off a good move with a shot from a narrow angle. Mackreth almost scored a second to give Barrow the lead when he flicked a ball past McKeown, but it bounced back off the post.

Hearn once claimed the match ball with his third of the game, turning and shooting to put Town's noses in front again.

Elding came on with 10 minutes to go replacing Duffy and had an immediate impact. Firstly Eagle and Elding combined, with Elding's shot being blocked. Then Eagle sent in a cross which Elding side-footed home to put Town 4-2 up. Eagle turned provider again two minutes later, crossing for Elding to add his second.

Town were once again defensively frail and could have easily conceded more than the two goals they did. However with devastating finishing from Hearn and then Elding, Grimsby could on this occasion afford not to worry too much about what the opposition did.

Crowds may have dropped at Blundell Park, but with seven goals and plenty of talking points, plus a three goal winning margin, at this rate they'll soon be coming back.
