Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

One game to go!
One game to go!

The Picture Gets Clearer

TWO out of the final three places in next season's Blue Square Premier League were decided at the weekend. The "other" GTFC, Gainsborough, were defeated by Nuneaton at the weekend, as were Welling by Dartford in the Kent derby for the second Blue Square South promotion spot.

Both matches followed a similar pattern with early goals to the victors and ending in 1-0 wins. Nearly 3000 were there to witness the Gainsborough match, and over 4000 were at Dartford to see the Darts triumph. Both matches were sell outs, impressive for what is the 6th level of English football.

Dartford deserved to go up as they finished way ahead of the others teams in the Blue Square South and were the only side to push champions Woking. Nuneaton can count themselves lucky to go up, as they finished fifth, but they managed to beat second played Guiseley over two legs. They managed to win both away games in the play-offs without conceding a goal.

The only other issue remaining to decide is whether Luton or York get promoted to the Football League. Both have failed before in the play-offs, and Luton in particular will be desperate to avoid another season at this level. They were only relegated because of a 30-point deduction and have spent 3 seasons in the Conference, each time missing out on automatic promotion. The Hatters are by far the biggest side at this level, and if they don't get promoted will doubtless be favourites to win the league next year.
