Grimsby v Morecambe Team News

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/08/2016

GRIMSBY'S six year exile from the Football League comes to an end on Saturday when Town take on Morecambe at Blundell Park in front of what promises to be a big crowd following the Mariners' triumph at Wembley in May.

The intervening weeks have seen the club's squad trimmed to virtually nothing and Paul Hurst has had to build three quarters of the team from scratch to face the challenge of a new division. The pre-season results, never the most reliable pointer, have been mixed, but the fans will only find out how good the new side is after the first half hour of the game with Morecambe tomorrow.

Captain Craig Disley, one the few to sign a new deal, is definitely missing after sustaining concussion in a pre-season game and Ben Davies is acting captain. Defender Zak Mills is also sidelined through injury. Nine of the likely starting eleven are likely to make their full debut for Grimsby, in what must not have happened in the opening game since one of the World Wars!

Morecambe are one of the less fancied sides in the division, but that doesn't mean much as Northampton were expected to struggle this time last year and they ended up winning the league.

Whatever happens tomorrow the town can be proud that the team have climbed again to this level and the team will doubtless be competitive, even if it takes a few games to get the dynamics of the team established.
