50 Points Reached!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/03/2017

GRIMSBY reached the 50 point mark - which should assure safety whatever happens in the final games on the season - with a fine 3-0 win over struggling Leyton Orient. It was a classic away performance from Town who restricted Orient to a handful of chances from plenty of possession.

The Mariners were clinical at the other end of the pitch with three fine goals. Sam Jones rose like a salmon to hang in the air and power in Danny Andrew's cross after 7 minutes to give Grimsby an early lead. Orient had most of the play in the remainder of the second half but were unable to trouble James McKeown.

The second goal on 71 minutes was slightly fortunate as a short from Jones came back off the 'keeper and went in off a ricochet. However the third goal came from a sublime chip of a pass from Disley into the path of Vernon, whose perfectly struck volley launched the ball into the top of the goal.

Town were not at their best but they did enough to comfortably beat the team in front of them. The Mariners travel to Pompey on Tuesday night with 50 points in the bag and nothing to lose. Three points are more or less essential, albeit very hard, if Town want to maintain an outside chance of reaching the top 7.
