Cheltenham Strike Again

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 18/04/2017

GRIMSBY'S slim chances of promotion all but ended after a poor display at Cheltenham. Two conceded two early goals to give themselves a mountain to climb, which they partly ascended when Berrett pulled one back. However, Gavin Gunning's red card for a tackle on Danny Wright effectively ended the contest which finished 2-1.

Grimsby struggled to make any impact in the first half, other than a Danny Andrew free kick which tested the 'keeper in the opening minute. Cheltenham took the lead from a corner when Boyle got in front of his defender and glanced a header well wide of McKeown. Former Mariner Harry Pell made it two with a long-range effort 5 minutes later.

Berrett and Vernon came on after the break for Osborne and Jones and the two combined to give Town a lifeline. However within 7 minutes Gunning got a straight red for a rash challenge on Wright. Town struggled to make any inroads in the closing 10 minutes with their numerical disadvantage a handicap on a difficult pitch.

The Mariners have failed to win three games in succession all season and the prospect of them doing so in the final three games would appear very slim.
