Lady Luck Deserts Town

GRIMSBY were unfortunate to lose at Cheltenham. The Mariners went behind to a heavily deflected goal in the first half, deservedly fought their way back into the game with a well-worked Embleton equaliser and then looked the most likely to win it before conceding an injury-time penalty.

Town deserved at least a point and were very hard done by to come away with nothing.

Michael Jolley kept faith with the same side that won at Chesterfield. Town started well and had the better chances, with Hessenthaler and Embleton going close. Cheltenham took the lead against the run of play with their first notable effort, a Broom shot taking a huge deflection to leave McKeown wrong-footed. Cheltenham took confidence from the goal and ended the first half the stronger side, although Vernam had two late effort saved.

Grimsby dominated in the second half and some brilliant play in the box by Thomas saw him shoot into the unmarked Embleton whose late run resulted in an easy finish for the loanee.

Town continued to press and Embleton, Pringle and Thomas went close, although there were occasions when Cheltenham also took have taken the lead.

Town were denied a blatant penalty when Thomas was pushed over in the box but neither official appeared to have seen it. The frustration was compounded when the referee awarded a late penalty for a collision between Harry Davis and Sam Jones. Substitute Conor Thomas won the points for the home side from the spot and there was not enough time left for Grimsby to fight back.
