Late Goal Defeats Dale

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/08/2022

GRIMSBY earned their first three points of the season and their second win of the week thanks to a trademark late, headed goal from Luke Waterfall. Town did well to reach halftime without conceding but improved after the break and were the better side, albeit without creating many chances.

Town though keep going to the end. They scored 12 goals in the 90th minute or later last season during league games, and Luke Waterfall was responsible for a few of them. He directed a late header from a corner with the 92nd minute on the clock, and Town successfully negotiated the last 4 minutes to complete the job.

Ryan Taylor and Harry Clifton returned following the 4-0 cup win over Crewe with Danny Amos and Aribim Pepple dropping to the bench.

Rochdale almost scored straight away when dangerman Seriki crossed to Ball whose shot was blocked on the line by his teammate.

Henderson then had a shot blocked for Dale and only a last gasp tackle from Efete denied Rodney.

Town were on the ropes as Rochdale created all the chances in the first half, although Morris hinted of better things to come with a late effort that bounced back off the crossbar.

After the break Town improved defensively and largely nullified Rochdale. Chances though were at a premium at both ends and Kiernan and Amos came on for Wearne and Green to try and change the game.

Town finally created a chance when a cross to Efete was easily saved then Henderson fired over for the home side.

Pepple came on with five minutes to go and there were appeals for a penalty when he charged into the boxed and was felled. Grimsby had to settle for a corner though, as the match entered injury time, and Glennon picked out Waterfall who guided his header into the net to send the Town faithful into ecstasy.

There was almost a last twist when a late chance for Sinclair was squandered from a Dale corner, but Grimsby held on to record another clean sheet and return home with three points in their tally. They take on Carlisle United at home next on Tuesday night.
