Town to Face Championship Opposition

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/01/2023

GRIMSBY will face a Championship side away in Round 4 of the FA Cup. The winner of the Wigan v Luton replay will face the Mariners at home. Luton are currently seventh and Wigan are bottom. Town have already beaten three teams in the division above them this season, so will be looking to go one better.

Although it's not the dream draw that many fans were hoping for it's a chance to progress to the Fifth Round, something Town rarely achieved even in the years they entered the competition in Round 3. The fixture will be played on 28th January - it's not going to be picked for TV.

The full draw is as follows

  1. Preston North End v Tottenham Hotspur
  2. Southampton v Blackpool
  3. Wrexham v Sheffield United
  4. Ipswich Town v Burnley
  5. Manchester United v Reading
  6. Luton Town or Wigan Athletic v Grimsby Town
  7. Derby County v West Ham United
  8. Stoke City v Stevenage
  9. Blackburn Rovers v Forest Green Rovers or Birmingham City
  10. Walsall v Leicester City
  11. Sheffield Wednesday v Fleetwood Town
  12. Manchester City v Oxford United or Arsenal
  13. Bristol City or Swansea City v Chesterfield or West Bromwich Albion
  14. Brighton & Hove Albion v Liverpool or Wolverhampton Wanderers
  15. Fulham v Sunderland
  16. Boreham Wood or Accrington Stanley v Cardiff City or Leeds United

Town's John McAtee is on loan from Luton so would probably not be allowed to play, as would Pepple who is also on loan from the Hatters.

Wigan have home advantage in the replay the week after next. Town have not played there since 1998 so it would be a new ground for many supporters whereas Grimsby and Luton have met many times in recent years.
