Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish next season?

GRIMSBY bounced back from the midweek defeat at Crewe to cement their play-off spot with just five games remaining. The Mariners have re-established their three-point cushion, although their -1 goal difference is far inferior to that of the teams around them.

Green scored twice in between a superb Barrington strike, as Town ramped up their game in the second half thanks to some timely substitutions.

David Artell made four changes to the starting line-up from the Crewe defeat. Turi, Burns, McJannet and Rose came in for McEachran, Svanthorsson, Warren and Luker.

Both sides had early chances, although Morecambe were adjudged offside. Shortly after, Danny Rose stretched to connect with a deep ball from Turi, but his effort bounced off the crossbar from close range.

Town had most of the possession without creating much until a deflected effort from a Hume run and shot led to a corner from which Grimsby scored. The goal came from Green's glancing header at the near post, direct from Hume's corner kick.

The game was soon level though, when Morecambe broke and Dallas was allowed time to curl his shot past Wright into the net for a well-taken goal.

Town had been the better side in the first half but had created little. Artell brought on McEachran after the break for Turi, who had been booked. McEachran and Hume combined from a free kick and played the ball to Barrington on the edge of the box, who blasted it in with his left foot to give Town the lead.

Grimsby continued to look more likely to score and created more than in the first half, but Morecambe were always a threat with just a one-goal margin. Town needed a second and finally got it during a sustained spell of pressure. The ball was played out to Rodgers, whose cross was flicked on by Barrington, when Green applied the finishing touch with a flick in front of the Pontoon.

Town had other chances, and Rodgers forced a save late on to deny Town a fourth. The key to the victory was the halftime substitution. McEachran's composure on the ball and presence in midfield made the difference. He is the player who makes Town tick.

With the match day squad returning to near full fitness, David Artell will be hoping Town maintain their form in the season's home straight.

The next match takes place at Harrogate on Saturday, another side near the wrong end of the table, who Town last beat on Boxing Day.
