Town beat 10 man Ebbsfleet

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/11/2025

GRIMSBY overcame a half-time deficit to National South side Ebbsfleet, to eventually run out 3-1 winners with all the Town goals in the second half. Ebbsfleet were reduced to 10 men just before the break when Chapman was dismissed for a reckless challenge close to the dugouts.

Danny Rose scored two of Town's scrappy trio of goals, with McJannet netting the middle of the three.

Artell made four changes from the EFL Cup defeat to Brentford: Turi, Walker, Svanthorsson and Rose came in place of McEachran, Burns, Green and Kabia, who were all on the bench.

Town had to change their plans after 10 minutes when Sweeney was unable to shake off an injury. Oduor came on in midfield with Khouri moving to left-back.

The Mariners had plenty of possession but struggled to create anything in the first half, with players opting for easy passes and being unable to make many inroads into the final third. Ebbsfleet looked the more dangerous when they did get forward and won a few corners. The first meaningful chance came just after 30 minutes when Grimsby gave the ball away in midfield and Seaman struck a low shot past Pym, which the 'keeper should have done better with.

Chapman received a straight red card just before the break for a dangerous challenge on Walker, right in front of the managers. Town got the ball in the net in the closing stages of the first half, but it was disallowed for an offside. It proved a harbinger of things to come.

Kabia came on after the break in place of Walker, then Town levelled the game early in the second half when Vernam’s strike ricocheted into the path of Rose. Shortly afterwards, following a corner, the ball broke to McJannet to nod in from close range and put Town 2-1 up. Rose then added a third and his second when he deflected Turi's mishit strike.

Town had more chances with Rodgers firing over and Soonsup-Bell inches away from sliding into a cross at the far post, but in the main were content to pass the ball around and keep possession.

It was far from a vintage display, and the sending off undoubtedly helped, but Grimsby managed to win comfortably in second gear without several of their first-choice players. Ebsfleet were hard to break down, and Grimsby missed McEachran's link-up play in midfield.
