Town's game against Tranmere at Derry City in the final of the tournament they were participating in was abandoned last night as the shock news reached the stadium that the Derry City chairman Kevin Friel had died earlier in the day in a road accident.

From http://www.derrycityfc.com/

Derry City chairman, Kevin Friel was tragically killed this afternoon, in a road accident outside Raphoe in Co. Donegal.

The news was relayed to a shocked Brandywell crowd tonight during the final of the City Cup between Tranmere & Grimsby. The match was abandoned as a mark of respect.

Kevin had been Chairman of City for the past three years - and had lead the club through a period of great financial difficulties.

Derry City Football Club, and indeed the whole of Irish football, will be much poorer without him.

All our thoughts and prayers are with his young family.

Kevin Friel RIP
