Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Lawrence Appointed

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/08/2000

At a press conference at Blundell Park this evening the board announced the news that Lennie Lawrence had been appointed as manager of Grimsby Town. Our man at the press conference, Nigel Winn, reported that the initial contract is for two years.

There has been great speculation regarding this appointment but The Fishy placed him in the frame when Alan Buckley was dismissed on Tuesday.

The board have acted quickly, as they said they would, in naming Lawrence as the Town Manager and Vice Chairman, Bryan Huxford, praised the Chairman, Doug Everitt, for his quick action and work in getting Lawrence for the Mariners.

In the press conference Bryan Huxford said that it had been a hectic week for all the board with an excellent ending. On the question of timing, Huxford revealed that he had first spoken to Lennie Lawrence on Tuesday and then met him on Wednesday, when a contract was agreed.

Huxford said that Lawrence was the board's number one choice but they had had other options for the new manager. Money would be made available to the manager for new players "if he wants some we will give him all the support we can if we think it's the right decision for the club".

Lennie Lawrence said that he was delighted to be here, and couldn't believe his luck that Town wanted him. Grimsby were a "wonderful club with ordinary people running it. Town is about the same size as Boro and Charlton when I first arrived."

John Cockerill has been appointed as the assistant to Lawrence. "Cockers" will be in full control for the Sheffield Wednesday game, which Lawrence will watch from the directors' box

Tonight we have exclusive interviews lined up with both the new management duo which can be heard by clicking on the links below.
