Stadium Meeting

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/08/2000

New ground

A special meeting of North East Lincolnshire Council has been arranged to discuss their consultant's report investigating sites for Grimsby Town's new football stadium.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 20th September commencing at 7pm at the Town Hall, Grimsby.

The report was comissioned by the council from Leeds-based property consultants Graham Eve following the decision to vote against the proposed new stadium in Great Coates on July 13th. The report will look at sites that fit the criteria agreed by the council at its special meeting held not long after the infamous vote.

One of the sites expected to feature in the report is the site on the docks which is photographed in our Docks Site Special Feature. Whether it is a suitable site and meets all the criteria, as Todd Bontoft has pointed out in Council In Dock, looks unlikely however. The other site thought likely to be in the report is Stallingborough's Water Meadows.

The report and its recommendations have not yet been released but a swift resonse was promised by the council, which is hopefully what wll take place at next month's meeting.

The people of North East Lincolnshire and Town fans everywhere will be keeping a close watch on developments. The stadium debate has gripped the area and the public anger at the council's rejection of the stadium at Great Coates galvanised the council into this action.

The high profile meeting will surely have a very full public gallery on 20th September!
