Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Reserves Lose to Sheff U

Grimsby Town's second string today went down to a significantly better Sheff Utd team in a poor game. The final result was 1-0 (although I got to the game 2 minutes late, I didn't hear any cheering from the crowd, which included around 20 Sheff Utd fans).

Town lined up as follows:

Croudson
BloomerWardSmith.RChapman
JefferyMurrayBuckleySmith.D
RowanKennerdale

Sheffield Utd had Olympic gold medalist Patrick Suffo, ex-Leeds player Bruno Ribero and former Swindon keeper Frank Talia in their lineup.

Town started promisingly and Eastwood Town trialist Nicky Kennerdale looked very good but raw, he combined pace, power amd flashes of skill and proved a real handful. Ben Chapman also had an excellent game getting forward with pace and almost equalised 5 mintes from the end with a long-range shot which flew past the keepers left hand post.

The goal came from a run down the middle from Ribero who placed the ball wide to the right where Mark Ward swung in a low cross which was put into Croudsons goal leaving him no chance.

Trialist Menno Willems was not in the squad despite expectations that he would be. One man who was present at the match was former manager Alan Buckley, who I spotted in the second half. One presumes he was here to watch his son. However maybe Alan was at the ground deciding which players to take to his next club. Paul Groves would be hot favourite to join the man who has bought him on 3 other occasions for a combined fee of just over a million.

Overall the game was dire and Town were missing players such as Clare and Burnett who have been regulars in the last few weeks. Promising points were Nicky Kennerdale, Ben Chapmam, another strong performance from Matthew Bloomer and the ever improving Ian Ward.
