Nielsen - Sign Or Leave

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 11/01/2001

Grimsby Town manager Lennie Lawrence has issued another 'ultimatum' to on-loan Danish striker David Nielsen - sign for the Mariners before the end of this month, or go back to Copenhagen and rot in the reserves.

Nielsen's loan contract expires at the end of January, and after attempting to stamp his authority on the issue in December - only to later go back on his word - Lawrence is wary of having his reputation damaged further as he chases the former Danish Under-21 international's signature: "I'm hoping he sees sense and he's got until the 27th, it's as simple as that. I'm not moving. Our offer's there and there's no way I'm messing about with that," said the Town boss. "[David and his agent are] under the misapprehension that we might wait until the summer and then go back in for him - we won't. If he goes, he will not be coming back here - ever." Lawrence clearly believes that Nielsen should make the most of the opportunity that he has been given at Grimsby, as he continued: "We are ready to sign him and he's a bit of a hero here but, if he goes [back to Copenhagen], I think they'll just let him rot in the reserves or try and sell him to Germany." The Grimsby boss also revealed that should the Nielsen deal fall through as expected, he will not be looking to bring in a permanent replacement, preferring instead to use one of his remaining loan options: "I've got two English loans to use and we need to keep one of them up our sleeve in case anything happens to Danny Coyne. It will probably be an English loan and we've got one or two options. "The Scandinavian season finished in November and I haven't got a month to get them ready," Lawrence continued. "We've got an English three-month available and that's what we will do."
