Campbell Left To Stu

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 15/01/2001

After Saturday's catastrophic showing against Crewe, Town midfielder Stuart Campbell has revealed that he was "bitterly disappointed" by the Mariners performance. Campbell was once again the jewel in Grimsby's crown as they turned in what was undoubtedly their worst performance of the season.

Having signed on-loan from Leicester City for the season, the Scot has quickly won over the Grimsby crowd with his dedicated approach and commitment to the cause, prompting suggestions that he is setting an example that should be followed by other players who are already under permanent contracts with the club.

"We are bitterly disappointed with the result. We ran the game early on and I think in that spell we had to score really," said Campbell in an interview with the Grimsby Evening Telegraph.

"They came here with a gameplan of hitting us on the break and all credit to them - it worked. We had a lot of possession but they caught us.

"We've been doing quite well and we were confident going into the game of winning," he continued, "now we've got to pick ourselves up for the Wycombe game."

"The only good thing is that we've got a game so close so we'll be able to get it out our systems. As from now we've just got to focus on Wycombe."

When pressed about his long-term prospects with regard to the Mariners, Campbell chose to keep his cards held firmly to his chest, saying:

"I'm not thinking about long term, I'm just thinking about playing."
