Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Reserves Lose to York

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 31/01/2001

Grimsby Town's second string went down 2 goals to one against York City in a very poor game. The Mariners had their usual mixture of returning first teamers and young hopefuls which included Bradley Allen's return to competitive action.

Town lined up as follows:

Croudson
WardRavenSmith.RChapman
Smith.ABolderBlackBuckley
AllenRowan

York, so short of players could only provide 4 substitutes.

Town had the worst possible start when after 5 minutes a cross was diverted past Steve Croudson and into the empty net by BEN CHAPMAN. More bad news followed 10 minutes later when Jonathan Rowan went in for a 50-50 tackle with Martin Reed and came out worse, Rowan received attention for 5 minutes before being carried off, the promising star certainly didn't look too good at all.

In place of Rowan came Darren Mansaran, who didn't really have a lot of service all game. Halfway through the half York played some nice football which resulted in Scott Jordan going one on one with Croudson, but the Town keeper stood up well, and the shot went wide.

Town responded with 2 chances in a minute, first Mansaran put in a low cross which Bradley Allen put marginally wide and seconds late Paul Raven headed over from a Andy Smith cross. Croudson produced a fine save from a Kieran Darlow header just before the break.

Second Half

The second half was a dull affair with neither team creating many chances. Kingsley Black was pulling the strings for Town but little was happening up front.

After playing an hour Bradley Allen was replaced by Russell White. Town were now starting to struggle as without Allen the ball was not being held up in the final third.

Town eventually got their breakthrough 15 minutes from time with KINGSLEY BLACK smashing home from 20 yards. However almost instantly York broke and a sliced Ormston shot, which was heading for a throw-in fell to the free SCOTT JORDAN who slotted past Croudson.

As the end approached Buckley was replaced by Graham Hockless after Buckley just escaped a booking following a late challenge.

Final Score: Grimsby 1 York 2

Man of the Match: Kingsley Black - played very well and could even make the bench on Saturday.

Good Points:

  • Return of Bradley Allen.
  • Skillful play of Kingsley Black
  • Erm.... that's the only good points
Bad Points:
  • Injury to Jonathan Rowan
  • Poor finishing
  • Poor crossing
  • Bad own goal
  • Very little fight.
