Town Interest In Brentford's Paul Gibbs?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 29/05/2001

UNCONFIRMED reports suggest that Brentford defender Paul Gibbs is being trailed by both Grimsby and Luton Town. Gibbs, who plays as a wing back, is a crowd favourite at Griffin Park, but will be released on a free once Ijah Anderson has proved his fitness.

Rumour has it that chairman Ron Noades has told Steve Coppell that Gibbs can go because he believes the player is injury prone.

Noades is also reported to be unhappy at Gibbs' refusal to obey an instruction to stop talking to fans on one of the club's unofficial websites. (Welcome to the Fishy Paul!)

The former Plymouth man, suffered a terrible double fracture to his left leg during the final game of the 1998-99 season and underwent an operation to have a steel pin removed from his knee just before the end of last season.

He is said to be angry at being told to stop talking to fans and with Brentford anxious to cut the wages bill and Gibbs being out of favour, he could be one of the first to go later in the close season with The Mariners reported to be interested in.

Gibbs, who is best known off the pitch as the ex-boyfriend of Soccer AM's Helen Chamberlain (below), himself said of any possible move to Blundell Park "I can't comment on the situation at the moment."
