Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Town Reserves 2 Scunthorpe Reserves 0

By: Martin Copass
Date: 18/10/2001

ON A BRIGHT breezy afternoon, the reserves line up included a surprise inclusion. His name was Alan Neilson, a right back who is currently on the books of Fulham. Also included were Stacy Coldicott and Michael Boulding.

With the game barely two minutes old Town had the ball in the net through Stacy Coldicott, but the goal was ruled offside. After ten minutes, Thompson was put through, but he failed to capitalise on the opportunity.

Scunthorpe looked the more likely to break the deadlock although Boulding did come close half way through the first half. It was not Town’s best home performance to date, but they defended well with Neilson putting on a good show.

The second half was barely two minutes old, when Town took the lead through Michael Boulding. The goalkeeper beat out Mansaram’s shot, but Boulding scored from the rebound. Town looked more like their old selves now and they increased their lead when Boulding scored his and Towns second after good work by Thompson.

Shortly after this, Paul Raven came on to replace Coldicott to give him his first of football for some time. Town continued to create chances with Scunthorpe not keeping up their good first half form.

Freddie Cass replaced the hardworking Mansaram after 63 minutes, and then an amazing incident followed when Thompson’s thunderbolt shot hit one post flew across the goal and then hit the other post but didn't go in!

Steve Downes became the last substitution when he replaced the impressive Boulding, but there was to be no further goals from Town.

Town’s defence were kept busy, and they coped very well, with Neilson having a good first game for Town. Paul Raven seemed to get through his thirty minutes ok so this may be a good sign for the future weeks ahead.

Another reasonable performance by the young reserves and another three points to keep them near the top of the table.

Grimsby Town Croudson, Neilson, Morgan, Coldicott (Raven 58), Ford, Ward, Hockless, Bolder, Mansaram (Cass 63), Thompson, Boulding (Downes 72).
Subs not used Ermes, Moran.

Scunthorpe Bennison, Hawcroft, Ridley S, Barwick, Mc Combe, Ridley L, Sheldon, Anderson, Quailey, Littlejohn Brough.
