Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Marlon Broomes Wants to Stay - Beharall Goodbye?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 08/11/2001

MARLON Broomes has permission from his club to stay at Blundell Park for another month. The Grimsby Town Board will make decision on that shortly says manager Lennie Lawrence, but it looks like David Beharall will say goodbye after the game on Saturday.

Broomes however is not content with staying as a loan player and has expressed his wish, that depite recent results, he would like to sign a permanent deal with the Mariners.

"I've had a little chat with the gaffer and he wants me to stay, but they've got to talk to the board. I'm really happy to stay," he told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"When I first came it was about getting games under my belt and getting in the shop window. But as the months progress, though I know the team is not doing too well, I would like to stay if the offer is right.

"I think we can turn it around here and, provided Lennie Lawrence doesn't go anywhere, I'd stay if I was happy with the deal. But that's a big factor, whether Lennie stays or goes, because I know he's up at the end of the season."

Broomes who was on the injury list is back in training today and so too is Jonny Rowan, Phil Jevons and Stacy Coldicott were also back in action which brings some relief to Lennie Lawrence..

Broomes is expected to partner Paul Groves in defence and says they have nothing to fear from Sheffield Wednesday.

"I think we can take some confidence out of the last game. Wimbledon had two efforts on goal in the first half last week and scored one. We got back in the game and they got a deflection that nobody could do anything about.

"We've got no reason to fear Sheffield Wednesday and if we can take last week's performance into the game we can get a result. We can kick-start our season with this game."

David Beharall looks looks almost certain to return to the North East when his loan deal runs out at midnight tomorrow. Town either have to sign him or give him a season long loan but with Paul Raven regaining his fitness it is not an option Town would want to take up.

Lennie Lawrence said "We are actively exploring the possibility of extending Marlon's loan by another month but the situation with David is more complicated."

"The only option open to us is to take him for the rest of the season because he's already had his three months which is the maximum allowed under short-term loans."
