Lawrence Seeks New Broomes Deal

LENNIE LAWRENCE met the board at Blundell Park this afternoon to try and reach an agreement with the club to approve a third month on loan for Marlon Broomes. With the Blackburn defender keen to stay at Blundell Park, the stumbling block is Grimsby's usual problem these days - money.
Fellow loanee David Beharall was forced to leave Blundell Park, where he had spent three months, after the board refused to sanction an extension of the Newcastle defender's loan until the end of the season. With British players only allowed to spend three months on loan at another club, Lawrence's only option in Beharall's case was to extend his loan until the end of the season. The same will apply to Broomes in a month's time should Lawrence wish the keep the Blackburn central defender at Blundell Park beyond his third stint - subject of course to the GTFC board granting even that.
With Broomes winning the manager's praises after a battling performance in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, Lawrence is looking to get any extension sewn up rapidly, after the issue has now been unresolved for over a week. "I'm looking to get it done quickly," said the Town boss. "Marlon's done well - especially when you think that he's not 100 per cent fit. His knee is a bit of a problem and even though he's carrying a bit of an injury - he's a decent player for us."
The former England-U21 International has become a bit player at Ewood Park where he has become to surplus to requirements. "As soon as Graeme Souness took over, I knew I had no chance," said Broomes, who has enjoyed a successful two months at Blundell Park, and become one of Lennie Lawrence's key players.
"I got the feeling he had made up his mind from day one. I do have feelings for the club, I joined them at 16 and am their longest-serving player. I have got on well with all the other managers who have passed through. But now I just want to get away from Blackburn and show what I can do."
Postscript: The club have confirmed that, as a result of this afternoon's meeting between Lennie Lawrence and the board, Marlon Broomes is to stay at Blundell Park for another month on loan.
