Who will win League 2?

Wolves Looking To Take Simon Ford

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 14/03/2002

FIRST division big guns Wolves are planning to up the ante in their bid to sign Grimsby Town's highly-rated centre-back Simon Ford reports the Grimsby Telegraph. Ford is also reported to being tracked by Newcastle United as well as a string of unnamed first division clubs.

Derby County have also scouted Ford who is out of contract in the Summer but Wolves look as though they are ready to make a move for him.

Ford is in contract talks with the Grimsby but Dave Jones at Wolves is hoping to tempt him with the lure of Premiership football next season. And he could even make a bid for Ford before the transfer deadline in a fortnight.

Although Town boss Paul Groves wants to keep Ford if he does choose to leave there is little he can do to prevent it and Town will only receive a small fee set by a tribunal.

Lennie Lawrence signed Ford on 12-month contract last Summer and although he has stated that he wants to stay at Blundell Park, the chance of him playing in the premiership, may be too good an offer to turn down.

Groves is in an awkward position with contract talks dependent on which division Grimsby are in next season, which is slowing the current talks with players regarding their future.

Ford has been one of Town's brightest prospects since he arrived and it will be a blow to Groves if he loses him. But with bigger clubs chasing him it is more likely that if an offer is made, he may well depart from Blundell Park.
