Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Peter Salsbury Looks Back

By: Peter Salsbury
Date: 29/04/2002

I, like many others started the season with high hopes if not so high expectations. We had survived the previous season on the last day and hoped this season would be better.

What a start! We were top of the league in August and Lennie was manager of the month. OK we did not play that well but we got the results and that's all that matters, or is it? If we kept playing like this would we be found out?

The answer was yes. We started to drop down the table and my low point was the home game against Rotherham. A poor team who made us look awful. Not only that the players that night looked liked a bunch of strangers not one of whom wanted to try for the fans. This game was followed by the highlight for me: the win at Anfield.

What a night, what atmosphere and what effort from all the players topped off by Jevons's wonder goal.

The sacking of Lennie I thought had come too late. I thought we were relegated by then and the appointment of Paul Groves was the "cheap" option looking to next season in Div 2.

What a stupid thought. He motivated the players, at least the ones who wanted to play for us, and we ensured survival with a game to go. Bradley Allen and Michael Boulding were a great team and Toddy was fantastic.

I now look forward to next season. A new stadium on the horizon, a young eager management team and hopefully, most of last year's heroes.

I think Michael will go and Menno should go but we could hang onto the rest.

Thanks for the memories and here's to 2002/2003
