Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Simon Ford To Sign New Contract?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 28/06/2002

Paul Groves is expected to make an announcement this week regarding the future of Simon Ford. Talks have been going on with the ex-Charlton central defender and the expectation is that he will be staying with the Mariners.

Michael Boulding looks like a lost cause and Groves will be having talks with winger Terry Cooke who might be joining the Mariners in pre-season training next week. Groves has previously said that Cooke was one he wanted to sign but the loss of the ITV Digital money meant that not all his plans could be fulfilled.

It may be that Groves is resigned to losing Boulding, which frees some cash to make offers to other players including Cooke.

With Boston United in serious trouble with the FA, Ben Chapman who announced he was signing for the Pilgrims, may have to think again about his future and Paul Groves is keen to talk to him before he puts pen to paper.

What has not been explained yet is why Chapman would want to sign for a third division club rather than staying at Grimsby, unless he was previously advised he was not wanted. If that was the case, it appears there has been a change of heart at BP because Groves seems keen to sign him now.
