GTFC Official Statement

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 10/09/2002

IN an official club statement today, Grimsby Town's Chief Executive Ian Fleming clarified the financial situation regarding the payment of the players' appearance money, and the involvement of the Professional Footballers Association.

The appearance money equates to approximately £300,000 over the whole season, and the players have been paid all due amounts relating to last season. It is only this season's appearance money that needs to be addressed.

Mr Fleming said: "We have a letter from the PFA which states that they are willing to assist the Club with the payment of the players' appearance money. That is a loan of course, and it does attract interest, just as any loan would. It also has to be legally agreed and binding on the club, and we have to demonstrate that we will be able to cover the repayments."

"It is understood that further financial support from the Directors would assist the Company in qualifying for the PFA funding."

"We'll be addressing the issue over the next few days, and assuming that the Clubs proposals are acceptable to the PFA, then the players will receive their accrued appearance money in the first pay week in December."

"Although the ITV Digital collapse naturally caused us some headaches - just as it did every Football League Club - support from the Board has ensured that the Club can meet its financial obligations to the Players and Inland Revenue."

"Town fans will have heard that some clubs in the Division - including ones far bigger than Town - have had major problems including not being able to pay players' wages."

"That is not the case at Blundell Park." END
