Who will win League 2?

Jarvis Man Was A Fraudster!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 13/05/2003

THE missing man at the centre of the Jarvis sponsorship deal with Grimsby Town was exposed as a fraudster by the Grimsby Telegraph today. James Stephen Venney, who has now resigned as financial controller of construction giant Jarvis Rail, served a prison sentence for fraud.

A key player in the deal between new sponsors Jarvis and the Mariners, the 49-year-old swindled thousands of pounds from Immingham Conservative Club in the 1990s, forcing the club to close when he held the position of treasurer, said the Telegraph.

Mr Venney, was sentenced to a 20-month jail term at Grimsby Crown Court in May 1996. During the hearing, Judge Michael Heath branded Mr Venney, who is known as Stephen, a "thoroughly dishonest man".

But Jarvis officials, who today confirmed he had resigned, were unaware of his past when they hired him in March 1999.

He played a massive part in organising the major sponsorship deal with Grimsby Town and Jarvis pledged the agreement would still go ahead

Mr Venney has not been seen since Thursday, May 1, when he left his York workplace to take part in the press conference to announce the six-figure deal with GTFC but he never made it to Blundell Park.

He has since written letters to his family and the company from Plymouth. In the letter to Jarvis, he offered his resignation, which the company accepted.
