Can Town Use Their Crewe For Promotion?

GRIMSBY Town fans have generally been divided up into two groups over this summer: those that believe the Mariners will push for promotion, and those that believe Town will do no such thing.

The Mariners never do anything by half. The past two decades demonstrate that one promotion can be followed by another, or one relegation spells trouble for the next season.
History shows that Town have spent the majority of their time in the top two divisions of the English League, and it is my belief that we will be there again, sooner rather than later.
I am not suggesting that Division 2 will be easy, as there are teams like QPR and Bristol City gunning for the same ambitions.
Grimsby have suffered in the transfer market against such teams and their ilk, who can offer more money and provide a more attractive deal because of their location.
We have recently seen the activities of Clive Platt, who would rather train and choose to potentially sign for a team currently under a transfer embargo, than come to Grimsby.
Paul Groves has proved to be very shrewd in the transfer market. He has made a few quality signings, some of them on loan, and these latest five look to fit the bill perfectly.
Crewe are a perfect example of a team that can suffer relegation from the first division and not have to break the bank or make any drastic changes to return at the first time of asking.
They stuck by their long-serving manager Dario Gradi and his ideas, they kept the nucleus of their young and emerging side and this ultimately granted them automatic promotion following a tremendous last season.
If Grimsby could follow in the footsteps of Crewe, then I see no reason why Town can't win automatic promotion next season.
However, I am remaining realistic. Crewe worked extremely hard for their place back in Division 1 and Town will have to do the same.
It is now down to Paul Groves, his players, and that bit of luck every team needs now and again to challenge for promotion.
If the squad keeps clear of injuries and has a relatively settled side, then maybe we can be discussing a desire for mid-table mediocrity in Division 1 this time next year!
