Back To The Building! - Yet Again!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 10/04/2005

Russell Slade in the post match press conference said: "It goes to show, in the last seven games, we have only scored two goals- it doesn't take too many brains to work out where our problem is."

(We knew all the time! Would it be in the coaching and the training one might ask? Correct me if I am wrong but I think the stats on the games this season show what the problem is and the fans seemed to have discovered it a long time ago.)

"I felt defensively we did very well. The one chance that fell to them was miles off-side, in my opinion."

"Not conceding a goal certainly gives us something to build on after recent results.

(So we are back to the building mode again. It seems a little late with the season almost over, but who am I to judge?)

"I thought where we let ourselves down, in the second period in particular, was that we gave away possession in the middle third too softly.

"Obviously, when the chances did come, they were few and far between for both sides, we didn't pull the trigger.

"It goes to show, in the last seven games, we have only scored two goals- it doesn't take too many brains to work out where our problem is."

(Here is the best bit!)

"I was a little bit tempted to throw him (young Nick Hegarty) on for the last ten minutes of the game. Certainly if we'd been losing the game I would have thrown him on, certainly if we'd been 2-0 up I would have thrown him on. I think it is important the time when you throw him on. It's okay throwing your young lads on but you don't want it in a situation were it can go wrong for him - it could put a young lad back three months."

Now play the game Mr Slade!

That lad would have gone without wages for a month to get 10 minutes in!

You are not telling me that in 10 minutes he could be set back three months. The season has not got that long to go. You either give the youngsters a chance when nothing is at stake or they never will be able to show their worth.

You might be glad you gave them a go next season when you need some players.

But there again we got a point. I don't know what for. It sounded like we did nothing constructive but maybe we can build on that as you say.

But don't hold your breath waiting!
