Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

THE Mariners have returned to Blundell Park for conventional pre-season training after a week spent bonding at an army camp in Cambridgeshire. The six new players have now spent over 100 hours in one another's company, together with the remainder of last season's squad.

"I think it has been good for the new faces who have come to the football club," Town boss Russell Slade told the Grimsby Telegraph. "It is good for them to get to know their team-mates, and it is also good for the other players who have been with me for the last 12 months to spend time together.

"We started pre-season early, particularly because we knew we were going there. It will stand us in good shape for the season," said Slade.

The Mariners began normal pre-season training today, in preparation for the first two friendlies this week against Bridlington (Wed) and Scunthorpe (Thu). The Bridlington match is largely a reserve friendly, with Town expected to be boosted by a number of trialists looking to be offered one of the remaining 2-3 professional contracts up for grabs.
