Wycombe Preview
By: Richard Lord
Date: 18/11/2005
THIS weekend sees another top-of-the-table clash when Wycombe entertain Grimsby at the Causeway Stadium. The Mariners will be looking to reverse the 1-0 home defeat of last month while Wanderers will be attempting to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Despite being undefeated in the League so far this season, Wycombe have drawn too many games and currently sit in 3rd place, a point behind the Mariners. Their failure to convert one point into three has prevented them from being top of the table for longer periods, but few can argue against their quality and strength and depth in their squad.
John Gorman has plenty of experience throughout his side. Stefan Oakes (left) knows his way to goal from midfield all too well against the Mariners, having notched three goals against Town last season. Rob Lee has Premiership experience, as has the formidable Tommy Mooney. Full back Clint Easton has played much of his career at a higher level and Kevin Betsy has pace on the wing, and will be looking to provide the strikers with good service.
Everybody knows about the inevitability of Tommy Mooney scoring against the Mariners. He scored the winner when the two clubs met last month, and has previously scored against Grimsby when playing for Swindon, Stoke and Watford. The amount of goals and chances Wycombe have been generating this season appears to suggest that the striker will get at least one good chance in the game to add to his tally.

Grimsby first came up against Wycombe in the 1997/8 season and drew both fixtures. Three years later they met in the FA Cup third round when Town crashed out after a replay at Blundell Park. The Mariners recorded their first win against Wanderers in the ill-fated 2003/4 season, but this is Town's only win against the Chairboys in nine meetings. Later that season Paul Groves' men were thumped 4-1. Iffy Onuora's goal that day remains the last time Grimsby registered a goal against the blues.

This result came when Town were impressive away from home but couldn't find a killer goal. Undeserved defeats at Darlington and Rushden preceded this fixture and once more the Mariners failed to capitalise on the back of a good performance. A goal was conceded either side of half time in a 2-0 defeat, which also saw Michael Reddy miss a penalty.
