1-0 or Bust!

GRIMSBY Town missed out on the opportunity to go back to the top of League Two with a disappointing 1-1 draw at lowly Rushden & Diamonds.

Ben Futcher’s second goal for the club gave Town the lead on the hour; but the away team were made to pay for an unassertive performance when substitute Simeon Jackson equalised with 18 minutes to go and ended up finishing the game grateful for a point.

1st Half

The Mariners made one change from the team that beat Chester with Michael Reddy coming in for Andy Parkinson; Gary Cohen reverted to right wing.

Town started brightly and could have gone ahead within two minutes. The Rushden keeper failed to collect a loose ball and Futcher managed to get a shot on target, which was kept out by a last ditch block by Hatswell.

The bright start soon petered out and the rest of the first half was largely forgettable. Rushden worked the ball around midfield without troubling the Town goal, and were continually caught offside by the Mariners high line defence. Meanwhile, Town struggled to carve any openings whatsoever and the through balls targeted at Reddy were covered well by the home defence.

The closest either side came to scoring in the first half was through Rob Jones. On 20 minutes a Rushden cross from the left had the big defender stretching to cut it out and he shinned the ball fortuitously wide when it could've gone anywhere. Minutes later he was at the other end heading a free kick straight at the keeper when he possibly should've done better.

Towards the end of the half Gary Jones picked up a booking for arguing (and accidentally throwing the ball in the referee’s face). Then in injury time, ex-Mariner Ronnie Bull made his only notable contribution of the game straight into Macca’s legs. The Town man was subsequently substituted for Croft. Bull received a yellow card.

The report continues in the Second Half.
