Wrexham v Grimsby Preview

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 07/08/2006

AFTER Saturday's dramatic 3-2 victory over Boston, the Mariners make a quick return to league action with a journey to Wales for tonight's clash with Wrexham.

Home > 2006-2007 Season > Previews > Wrexham (a)

New boss Graham Rodger will have to decide whether to stick with the side that started so slowly in the first half on Saturday, or to make changes to his line-up. The impact of 18-year-old Peter Bore was there for all to see at the weekend, and the pacy winger will be pushing for a starting berth.

Want away striker Michael Reddy could be rested, with his groin problem still causing soreness. This could see Rodger move Isiah Rankin up front, promoting Bore from the bench. However, "Grezzer" may be wary of throwing the teenager in at the deep end.

Wrexham will have Trinidad and Tobago under-21 midfielder Josh Johnson available after receiving international clearance to play for Denis Smith's side. Defender Shaun Pejic, Lee Roche and strikers Juan Ugarte and Lee McEvilly will miss out due to injury. Smith is hoping to bring in a Premiership striker in on loan to compensate for the loss of McEvilly and Ugarte. The Dragons drew 1-1 on the opening day at Wycombe, where goalkeeping errors from Michael Ingram and Wycombe keeper Ricardo Batista gifted both sides a goal.

Possible Teams:

Town (4-4-2) Barnes, McDermott, Futcher, Whittle, Newey, Rankin, Harkins, Bolland, Beagrie, Jones, Reddy.
Subs: Bore, Barwick, Croft, Toner, North.

Last Time

Town fans will have fond memories of our last visit to the Racecourse Ground. Town ground out a 2-1 victory against all the odds on New Year's Eve. Simon Ramsden, Rob Jones and Gary Croft all succumbed to injury during the match, which meant that striker Gary Jones played much of the game at centre half. Wrexham went ahead through a Mark Jones strike until just after half time, when Michael Reddy scored a solo goal. After 84 minutes, Town snatched the win from an unlikely source when the "invisible man" Glen Downey scored a header in what was to be his last ever appearance for the Mariners. Report.

Prediction - A 1-1 draw.
